PROPOSED REGULATION CHANGES AND DAMAGING EFFECTS

Proposed Regulations

South Africans face increased vulnerability to crime if the proposed stringent firearm regulations for the private security industry are implemented.

These draft regulations, published on 28 March, threaten the very industry that has grown to become one of the world's largest due to the South African Police Service's failure to adequately protect its citizens. With 586,000 active security guards in 2023, significantly outnumbering the actively deployed members of the 180,000-strong police force, restricting their ability to bear arms in a high-crime environment is both illogical and dangerous.

We strongly condemns these draft regulations, which aim to limit firearm use in public spaces, impose unclear ammunition limits, and even prohibit less-lethal weapons like rubber bullets and tasers.

While currently open for public comment, it is crucial that all stakeholders recognize the potential harm these regulations pose to crime prevention and the safety of ordinary South Africans.

We urge EVERYONE to actively participate in the public participation process and make submissions against these ill-conceived proposals by sending written objection to regulations@psira.co.za. We have made this easy for you in three easy steps.

It is imperative to prevent the implementation of regulations that contradict existing legislation and further weaken the ability of the private security industry to protect our communities.
